Consultations

That's me on the right.

Please note the patient list is currently closed so this info is for people who already have an appointment, sorry.

At Purehealth, we concentrate on preventative health measures and advice for health issues you already have.

We specialise particularly in those situations where you might have loads of weird or aggravating symptoms but no-one seems to know what's going on! Our job, if you like, is to look at other factors and options with you and set you on the right track to sorting yourself out.

Read again, if you like, about our philosophy and see a diagram of how the assessment process works here.

Consultations

Consultations are available face to face in-clinic or can be done via phone.

Face to face is always better, especially for the first one. Read below for more info on how how the consultation process works and for a general explanation of nutritional therapy.

Nutritional Therapy

What is it?

Medical Nutrition is a very powerful and effective alternative medicine approach, using food, specific nutrients and detoxification to help patients reverse or improve chronic illness.

Our nutritionist Michaela Rose combines nutritional therapy and naturopathy for the best results, focusing much more on encouraging the body’s own healing processes and detoxification than on straightforward nutrient excess and deficiency problems.

Could it help me?

Almost certainly. It can help if you have a labelled illness such as arthritis, high blood pressure or depression, but also if you have a variety of symptoms that defy conventional labelling. It is especially useful for patients with digestive disorders, nervous and immune problems, allergies and ‘syndromes’ such as IBS, fibromyalgia, candidiasis or ME.

How do consultations work?

We start with a full consultation. This can be face to face or over the phone and takes up to two hours, depending how complex your case turns out to be! Some limited support can be given by email but this tends to become overwhelming which is why I say it is limited!

For face to face and phone, we simply book a time as normal in the diary and then you turn up or call the office landline number at your alloted time.

Free 10 Minutes for All New Patients

As with all consultations for new patients, I will not charge for the initial query up to 10/15 minutes (and I can do a lot in that time!) This is so I can get an idea what you need help with, assess whether I am likely to be able to help, give you an idea of what the process might be and for you then to consider whether you want to work with me. If we decide to go ahead, I then charge as below. Your initial chat can be via email, phone or face to face.

What happens at the first consultation?

This is our fact-finding mission. It can vary but generally I will explain who I am and the process of how things work, take your general details (address, contact numbers, GP, meds and supplements you're on etc) and then we will take your case from the top. It might be that we start from when the trouble started or begin at childhood depending on your needs.

As we talk, I am trying to make pictures, if you like, in my head and putting the pieces of the jigsaw together with your help.

I will want to know what's happened when, what was done about it, what has helped, what hasn't, what meds/supplements you have taken and are currently on, what tests you have had (and copies of their results if you can get them) and loads more. I will ask about all the body systems, lifestyle, go through your diet, history, ask about othr family members probably, bowel movements, other seemingly unrelated topics. the point is to get the info out that I need.

It may seem a very different aproach. You may wonder why I am asking about your bowel movements or skin when you have come to see me about migraine. But there are reasons and I will go through these with you.

At the end of this first session, the idea is to decide between us what the process might involve, discuss options that fit your finanical and lifestyle needs and you should leave with an initial programme or actions to start asap. Note: Unless the jigsaw is very complex or unusual in some way and then I might say I will have a think and get back to you!

What happens next?

We may have decided between us that specific tests are a good idea. I may ask you to test your basal temperature or acidity at home, I may refer you back to your GP or consultant to chat to them about something. We may have decided to do an adrenal test, or a stool test to look for candida. In this case, we will probably get you started on any dietary changes whilst we wait for your test results. I then get you back in to go over the results and to discuss our strategy options. I will then recommend a prescription programme.

What might that involve?

Could be anything. There is no 'one-size-fits- all' with this approach, although there are some very common patterns. Your treatment may start with some form of detoxification and then a special diet and supplement and lifestyle programme designed to help you. Don't worry - we are not in the dark ages here and there are no fasts or enemas involved, just a diet to remove the primary or suspected allergens and a few capsules to take to encourage cellular, liver, kidney and bowel clearance!

This is usually the first stage for two reasons: first because I find it incredibly difficult to get people well whilst they have certain foods in their system which are probably allergens whether they know it or not and, second, because it is often a good idea to start with a good foundation and rebuild, if you like.

After that stage, we will either swap to maintenance if your symptoms have vanished (often the case - this is a powerful stage!) or move your prescription on to achieve whatever aim we have left eg killing off candida, healing a leaky gut, lowering stress, changing mindsets, balancing hormones, boosting adrenal or thyroid function etc etc. This will involve dietary and supplement prescriptions which could be a mix of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, herbals, homeopathics, Bach remedies or whatever is needed.

It might also mean having a regular therapy such as massage, a couple of sessions of hypnotherapy or CBT maybe, an exercise programme, a type of diet to lower belly fat - whatever we think is needed between us. This is a two-way street. My job is always to show you the way and give you the best advice I can. Yours is to do it and reap the rewards!

How do we keep in touch?

After your first consultation, we will normally book a review in about 4-6 weeks depending on your needs. Some people I might only see once or twice; others I might see every 6 weeks for two years and still others once in a blue moon as they need me. Most patients treat me as a 'natural GP' I suppose and may contact me for an opinion on something or when they need some advice.

In between review appointments, I may have asked you to let me know the result of any tests or feedback after two weeks, or something else. It is always best to email me if you can so I can put your emails straight into your notes which saves a lot of time typing! I would always prefer you checked anything you are not sure of rather than wait until your next appointment and have got it wrong.

Bear in mind, though, that I deal with a lot of emails every day so please keep it to a minimum. If it involves a lot of thought time or a new query rather than a quick question or reassurance, this is chargeable at the normal hourly rate (see prices ).

How long will treatment take?

Each case is unique, but patients can often start to feel better quite quickly within days and certainly weeks. However, you should allow for treatment of 6-12 months for more serious chronic conditions. It is important to continue treatment fully, even after symptoms disappear.

How much does it cost?

All new patients are welcome to a free 10-minute consultation. All consultation, review and casework is charged at the same rate of £55 per hour pro-rata.

You will also need to budget for any necessary tests and your supplements. Note we will recommend excellent value practitioner-level supplements - these are not the cheapest you can buy, but my reputation rests on helping you get well so I'm not going to recommend stuff that doesn't work! Advanced stuff normally works faster and so is far better value in the long run than buying cheaper versions that are not effective.

We also prefer you to swap to organic food and non-toxic body and home care products as much as possible during therapy.

How will I get hold of the supplements/foods/toiletries I need?

We used to have a huge dispensary and eshop but it rather took over my patient time. Now, we mainly use a fulfilment service for nutritionists called Natural Dispensary.

Following appointments, we will often let them know if you need something and ask them to contact you for payment and to arrange delivery. Or you can call them direct on 01453 757792. See here for more info on them and supplements in general.

We do it this way because the type of products we recommend can be quite complex and not easy to obtain. We found a lot of people either forgot what they needed, forgot to place the order and we lost time which affected the review process, or were buying the wrong things. With a prescription programme, balance between the products is crucial and may be a big part of how we plan to help you so getting it wrong can cause problems and delays.

We also have accounts with most of the individual suppliers like Green People, Nutrigold, Biocare etc and may refer you to Nutricentre, a huge fulfilment mail order/shop in London. You can find all their numbers and info about them and what they stock here.

Note: We do make a small amount of commission on some of your purchases which is what helps pay for all the admin, writing and research time so thank you.

Clinic hours are Mon, Tues and Weds 10am-8pm. Please note: I am not currently taking on new patients, sorry.
